America's Got Talent: Show 1

You can click the links to see the Youtube videos. The show started off with an interesting open - shots of the different " - Got Talent"'s from around the world. When I look back on it, it was a rather cool concept to the start of the show. At the moment, though, my film/TV side came out and I couldn't stop thinking how low-quality the clips looked. The start of the show was rather uneventful. Just enjoyed seeing the Hoff be the judge, and seeing his humor come out.I actually like watching the terrible acts. I enjoy seeing the terrible acts in the beginning and finding new favorite acts that I want to see in the next rounds.Only new thing this season that I didn't like was the strobe light thing on the X's. Hurts the eyes after a bit.Favorite act? It would have to be FootworkKINGz. They were AMAZING! Not only were they right on with the music but their feet were so fast AND they were together! It was a surprise and I really like the non-singing acts, myself. The Voices of Glory trio of kids who sang to their mother while she was in a coma for 8 months were also great. They had great voices, and blended together perfectly. Their act literally did give me chills, though. I was pulling a Sharon with the tears at the end there.Rockin' Rory was great. I'm such a sucker for pet acts that are actually really well done. That dog was amazing! It was so cool how the dog literally fly in the air and did tricks so quickly with those frisbies. It was a well polished act and I can't wait to see what they do in vegas.Last but not least, the Hasselhoff song! That had me rolling. The whole beginning I thought it was Pamela Anderson he was going to sing about. Especially that part where he sang that he bought his speedos off of ebay, but knew he couldn't fill them out like David. I'm glad Piers put him through! I was hoping. He can actually sing, which made it a bit sweeter. What is in store for us in Vegas? Another Hoff song? Maybe we won't even get to see him.I feel sorry for the Impressionist guy. He was so terrible.. he really had the passion and believed he was good at it. I wanted him to be good. That was probably the single act that I really just felt bad for the guy. You can see the pain and sadness in his eyes when the judges told him no.The one act I felt that shouldn't have made it to Vegas was the Love triangle couple. The act looked amateurish, and just wasn't that interesting at all.

His comic turn as the flamboyant Roger DeBris proved to be an audience favorite.Hasselhoff's autobiography, "Making Waves," was published by Hodder & Stoughton in the U.K. and was on the bestseller list. My daughter Hayley is on the board of a really neat charity here in Los Angeles called Teens Helping Teens. This is a group of teenage girls that have been involved at the Children's Hospital, Los Angeles for a while and I went with them on Easter Sunday to visit some of the kids over there.Around Christmas, Teens Helping Teens noticed that the teens in the hospital were really lacking things to keep them entertained. The kids that have to stay in the hospital are often there for a really long time and a lot of them are in isolation wards and can't really communicate with anyone but the nurses and their families. They're so brave and sweet. The girls of Teens Helping Teens went around and asked all these kids what they wanted the most to make their stay more comfortable and almost all of them said they wanted a computer or a PlayStation or something that would occupy them without risking them getting sick. The girls decided that they were going to do something about it and have organized a huge Young Hollywood party that's taking place in May. They've got Fred Segal doing a fashion show, Steve Aoki is going to DJ, and Rumer Willis is going to host. All the proceeds will go toward helping these sick kids feel a little bit better. They're going to purchase Wiis, PlayStations, Macs and all sorts of things that will help these children get through their illness"One man can make a difference" is something they really believe, and they believe you can do it no matter your age. I'm so proud of and impressed by them and the kids they're trying to help.If you'd like to donate, please make checks payable to:Children's Play Therapy/ The BashAttn: Albert Garcia4650 W. Mark Holden sells ‘touchdown’ catchphrase to David Hasselhoff

Entertainment and Showbiz

Ex-Australian Idol judge Mark Holden has sold his trademark ‘touchdown’ catchphrase to former Baywatch hunk David Hasselhoff.Holden has priced his renowned Idol catchphrase at the domestic and international rate of 10,000 dollars after it was replicated on the Channel 10 talent quest.Hasselhoff will in turn be able to perform the energetic move in his role as a judge on hit series ‘America’s Got Talent’.However, there was a catch to the sale - the fee must be donated to charity.Holden, holidaying with his family at Hasselhoff’s Bel Air mansion in LA, revealed news of the signature trade to Confidential.“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but a cheque would be better,” News.com.au quoted Holden, as saying.“David can’t wait to use it - and he’s planning to donate the money to a charity associated with the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department),” he added. Patricia Sheridan's Breakfast With ... David Hasselhoff

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Monday, June 16, 2008
Pop culture staple, actor and singer David Hasselhoff has enjoyed and endured decades of the limelight. From hit TV series' "Knight Rider" and "Baywatch" to Broadway performances and a singing career in Europe, he never wants for work. He returns as one of the judges for "America's Got Talent" in tomorrow night's two-hour season premiere, 9 p.m. on NBC.When judging "America's Got Talent," do you ever find yourself feeling embarrassed for the contestants?I feel embarrassed for some of the judges' comments. I feel embarrassed for some of my comments that I have to make that are sometimes honest. As much as I want to be compassionate and let people down in a positive way ... I have to be honest. I've been compassionate toward people by saying, "Somebody needs to get this person off the stage." They don't really realize what they are doing.

PG audio

When you first got into the business, was fame one of your motivators?Never, no. I'm just a kid from Baltimore who wanted to be in theater. I had no aspirations for fame. I wanted to go to Broadway. That's all I wanted to do. That was my goal. That was my dream, and I think you have to have goals and dreams.Your daughters, both teenagers, have seen you go through ups and downs in the tabloid press. They have a harder skin than me. They keep me straight. They know who I am and they know it's a bunch of garbage. My kids and I are tight. The stuff that I got this time last year [YouTube video of him looking drunk in Las Vegas shot by his daughter] was exploitative and was almost the epitome of blackmail [he was in the midst of a heated custody battle at the time] ... because it used my children. When that came out, it crossed the line for me.Singing seems to be where you heart really is, so why do you think that aspect of your career is more popular in Europe?I think it's because I've never really had a proper release or a proper marketing campaign or a proper song for America. I happened to have the right song [for Europe] ... called "Looking for Freedom" and it happened to come out right before the Berlin Wall came down and people in East Germany were looking for freedom. It couldn't have been better timing. Why did you want to write "Don't Hassel The Hoff?"I wanted people to see the journey that I've been through and all of the amazing things that have happened to me from being a celebrity. I mean, I did not play on the negative. I played on the positive. I wrote it because my life was about hard work and incredible adventures ... how I went to Soweto, South Africa, during apartheid, and met Princess Diana and Paul McCartney in the same day and affected children in a positive way with Make-A-Wish and Race for Life Foundation. All these amazing things that have happened to me because of being the "Knight Rider."You seem to have a good attitude about the tabloid stories. What are you going to do? I mean, I've sued. I had to sue OK magazine and the Sun because they said the day that I got my children -- both of them had erroneous stories about me being thrown out of clubs because of alcohol, which is absolutely untrue. I won both cases. They paid me money and printed apologies. They were absolute unadulterated lies. They don't tell the truth. They say whatever they want.

'Talent' show is back for 3rd wacky season

USA Today

Sitting in judgment: Piers Morgan, left, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff weigh in, but viewers will ultimately decide the winner.

NBC
By Gary Strauss, USA TODAY
Talent may be in the eye of the performer. But America's Got Talent is clearly in the eyes of viewers.

NBC's über-reality show, which has its Season 3 premiere tonight (9 ET/PT), seemingly has known no bounds when it comes to taste, train wrecks or talent ranging from Shirley Temple wannabes to rapping grannies. But it was also TV's top-rated show last summer, averaging 11.5 million viewers.

The quest for 15 minutes of fame (or far less, depending on how much the show's judges are willing to put up with) has attracted more than 200,000 hopefuls this season aiming for the $1 million prize, one of the biggest payoffs on TV. Last season's Talent winner, ventriloquist Terry Fator, also signed a five-year, $100 million contract to perform at Las Vegas' Mirage casino 48 weeks a year beginning in 2009.

"It's way better than hitting the lottery," Fator says. "In my wildest dreams, I never thought something like this could happen."

Talent is "a guilty pleasure — like The Gong Show and Let's Make a Deal— that's just pure Americana," says David Hasselhoff, one of Talent's three judges. (Though the judges toss the unworthy in the early going, viewers' votes ultimately decide the winner.)

"From wackos to heartwarmers, some of their stories are incredible," he says. "There are waitresses and sewer cleaners and a guy who's back from two tours in Iraq. They have a lot of heart. And the show just gives everyone hope."

This season's auditioners include "the most exciting and craziest acts on Earth," says hyperbolic host Jerry Springer. Tonight's episode includes an 80-year-old tap dancer, a 4-year-old singer and a 24-year-old cross-dresser with a spot-on impersonation of Britney Spears.

This season's show is a bit more polished, in part because there were more acts to choose from and more variety. "We were kind of wandering through the first season. And last year, there were a lot of kids who came on who were pushed by parents who thought they could sing," Hasselhoff says.

"It's ramped up big-time this year," he says. "We were able to go across the country and see the talent in several cities. We're seeing a terrific amount of dancers and singers who aren't so raw."

Aside from comedians, magicians, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers and tap dancers vying for stardom, several cross-dressers appear to be among the most talented contestants, Hasselhoff says. "The guy imitating Britney has a better shape and legs than she does. A transsexual has completely transformed into Tina Turner. And there's a transvestite with a five-octave range who does an amazing duet with himself."

Piers Morgan, the British journalist judge with the blunt, often-nasty critique style of American Idol's Simon Cowell (who co-produces Talent but does not appear), says that while the overall talent level may be higher this season, some was of dubious quality. "Certainly, there's a massive range of talent. Some I've never seen before, some I never want to see again."

But Morgan, like many Talent viewers, has a soft spot for oddities. "There's a 7-footer drinking milk through his nose and simultaneously blowing up small (firecrackers) around his midriff," Morgan says. "It's a very weird act, but incredibly entertaining."

'America's Got Talent' interview with Jerry Springer and Sharon Osbourne

M&C

Smallscreen FeaturesAmerica’s Got Talent premieres Tuesday, June 17 from 9:00 to 11:00 pm onNBCand promises to be a bigger event than last years. The judges will include Piers Morgan,SharonOsbourneand David Hasselhoff. Jerry Springer will serve as host.Executive producer Simon Cowell shared his thoughts: “This season we embarked on our biggest and most expensive tour yet, with record breaking turn outs.”“For the first time auditions were held intheatersall across America.  The judges, Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff were joined by a 2000 strong audience in each city. The audience became the fourth judge, and as you’ll see, they certainly let their views be known,” added Cowell.Monsters and Critics joined a few online journalists and spoke to judge Sharon Osbourne and host Jerry Springer of America’s Got Talent. In the promos we seem to be primed for a Paul Potts moment like Britain’s Got Talent from last year. And I wanted to know if you could confirm that? There’s an opera singer that’s going to be a breakout?Jerry Springer: Well the people - go ahead, Sharon.Sharon Osbourne: We’ve got everything. I mean, why pick on the opera singer? We’ve got everything from magicians to knife swallowers, to dancers, to cloggers - everything.Jerry Springer: Yeah. What is your least favorite variety act that you just think this isn’t going to go very far and then may have surprised you in the end?Sharon Osbourne: Probably jugglers because I personally haven’t seen a juggler that juggles anything else but plates or those clubs, or balls. And I’d like to see them juggle something else. What about you, Jerry?Jerry Springer: Yeah, and there’s - well, I think if you realize what they’re looking for, they’re looking for an act that is, going to be - for example, going to be able to work Vegas and be an act that can sustain an hour, hour and a half show that people month after month are going to be trying to get tickets to.And if it’s - some of these acts just aren’t big enough. It doesn’t mean that they’re not skilled.  They could have a phenomenal skill, but that’s not necessarily entertaining in terms of an hour and a half. And so when these acts go out -- and I’m just speaking for myself -- when I see them getting ready to go out, I’m saying to myself oh gosh, they’re not going to survive 15 seconds - not because they’re not skilled, but because it’s not something that could sustain this show.I think that’s an element that the people who try out have to be thinking about. Is there some sort of act that’s kind of taken you and surprised you, by how much you enjoyed it?Sharon Osbourne: Probably the pig that paints.  The painting pig.Jerry Springer: Yes.Simon Cowell has mentioned that pig at the NBC summer press day. He said there was a very talented pig.Jerry Springer: Yes, and - yeah. That’s - well that’s - yeah. And then we had an animal act right after that. No, it was - there’s some acts that come out that you,  you’re amazed at.Well there’s one - well I don’t want togiveitawaywhat the act is. But there is one that kind of - I think, really did surprise everybody. And no one would have thought - if you just saw what was written down the next act is so and so and he does this,  everyone would go boy, let’s get rid of this. Then he’s out there and we’re going oh my god. So there is -  I can think of some acts like that, and one in particular. But if I tell you what it is then - since he’s the only one that did that particular thing it wouldn’t be fair.Sharon, you’re such an animal lover. Do you just go nuts when the animals come out and do adorable things?Sharon Osbourne: Oh my gosh. We had some amazing animal acts, but none of them could do anything. They were all like - there were some ladies that just came with these dogs from a rescue and they did nothing and - except eat the treats. And I just thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen.Jerry Springer: Yeah.

Do you think Americans had more of a talent pool than the English?Sharon Osbourne: Well there are just more of you here, so yes there’s more talent because there are more people. How attached do you actually get to these contestants -  do you have them coming up to you after the show asking you for management or career advice?Jerry Springer: Well I make - let me, Sharon if you don’t mind, let me go first on this. I’m in a different position than the judges are because the judges -- to keep the show absolutely fair -- they do not congregate with the contestants and they keep their distance.Obviously, they pass them in the hall, they’re polite and everything. But that’s - at this point, they’re not to be involved like that. My role is totally different so I am backstage with the contestants quite a bit and their families. And the truth is, I do get invested with them at least emotionally because these are all  these are all really nice people who maybe never thought they would ever have a chance at a career inentertainment. But, wherever they live in the states, their friends and family say hey, you’ve really got some talent. Why don’t you try out? And they’re really hopeful and their families are there pulling for them.Just being a normal person you can’t help but really root for them and cheer them on. And when something - when it doesn’t go their way and their dream seems smashed for the moment, yeah, a good hug sometimes help and so yeah, I do feel a bit personally invested in them.Sharon Osbourne: Well the one thing is that we can always be objective because we don’t get emotionally involved with the contestants because we’re not allowed to speak to them. We’re not allowed to have any contact with them. And in that way, your heart doesn’t lead your head.Jerry Springer: Which is why I could never be a judge. I’d always say aw come on, put them through, put them through. Read more: 'America's Got Talent' interview with Jerry Springer and Sharon Osbourne - Monsters and Critics -http://www.monstersandcritics.com/smallscreen/features/article_1411582.php/Americas_Got_Talent_interview_with_Jerry_Springer_and_Sharon_Osbourne?page=1#ixzz0BrxL8JM3
